Farmers Market at Ix, brought to you by Market Central and the vendors

Feb 1 is looking good for the Market at Ix. Better weather brings out more vendors, so customers will have more options for farm produce, baked goods, meats, jams, pickles, prepared and ready-to-eat foods, crafts, and arts. Someone left a large purchase on a vendor table last week. If you find yourself in that situation, contact us. Customers and vendors often turn in bags of food at the end of the market when it is discovered that it has been left behind. We usaully have success at getting the lost purchase to the owner.

We have eggs and safe meats! Smaller producers create safer conditions (i.e. free range or forest grazed) to produce meat and eggs without the problems associated with intensive animal production. Local produce is fresher, environmentally conscious and not affected by the global food supply chains.

If the president goes through with freezing federal grants, Market Central and the Market at Ix will be affected. USDA funds the SNAP program to provide food asistance to those in need. Market Central, in partnership with the IRC New Roots program was recently awarded a USDA Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Project grant. These funds help our admistration to provide a safe and efficient market, training and education to staff and vendors, environmental programs, comply with food safety laws, and plan for growth and improvements without putting the burden on farmers and food prices. These are temporary but vital solutions to creating sustainable markets, which is our goal for the future. We think sustainable, self-supporting markets can be created in Charlottesville with the right plans and community support. Thanks for your continued support of local food and farmers markets.
