Greening the Market
The Greening the Market initiative provides actionable steps for market customers, vendors, and community members to participate in creating a healthier environment. We know habits can be hard to change, and sometimes you just need a little nudge.
As Maya Angelou once said, “When you know better, do better”.
We’re in this together!
We care about our community and the future health of our neighbors. We work to bring you access to fresh local food to keep your bodies and our local economy healthy. But we can do better! Food waste and landfill waste is a significant contributor to climate change. So we have a plan…
One of the significant sources of waste in our market is packaging for foods and plated items. Market Central is developing a program to transition our vendors toward compostable materials. When implemented, all foods and serving materials will be able to be composted! Thanks to the Southern Environmental Law Center’s 2023 sponsorship the financial impact on our vendors will be reduced significantly.
So let’s work together!
Market Central supplies composting bins at the Market that are collected by a commercial composter: Black Bear Composting.
A commercial composting company can process materials that a home composter cannot. For example, bones, meat, and oils are not advisable in a home composter but can be processed under commercial conditions. In addition, packaging materials that are certified compostable can be processed in these facilities! If you see the BPI logo, it goes in the compost!
You can learn more about HOME COMPOSTING methods or contact a residential composting company for home pick up.
