Farmers Market at Ix, Nov. 9, 2024
Hello Folks,
Living in Charlottesville, many of us probably feel anxious about the future of our country as a result of the national election. At Market Central and the Market at Ix, we will focus on what we do best: managing a farmers market to support local farms and small food and art businesses. We will take things one market at a time, and hope food access programs (SNAP, Senior Nutrition and WIC), and recently won federal grants will not be affected. We are pleased and grateful to announce that Market Central has recently been awarded an EPA Climate Resiliency Cohort grant to participate in a collaborative effort to plan for the impacts of climate change that will affect our community, including farms and food supply chain. Secondly, we just received word that we will be a subgrantee with the International Rescue Committee New Roots program to receive support to strengthen capacity and programs at the Market at Ix. We look forward to investing in our work and community. We have room on our board for people interested in guiding the work of this non-profit.
This week’s market is full, so please check the Marketspread map for vendor names and locations. This is the week for SFG Foods, Ryba’s Pierogi, Oro, Chaotic Good, and Rum Punch is back. All of the farms (except Peacemeal), and bakeries will be at market this week, along with a range of potters, jewelers, basketmakers, textile artists, soapmakers and more. Looking ahead, expect full farm participation up until Nov. 23. The Saturday after Thanksgiving will be a rest day for many regular vendors, giving an opening for craft and holiday vendors.
The UVA Biology Outreach and Inclusion Program team will be at market this week, with science activities sponsored by the Child Development lab. Bruce, Pete and the puppets will be performing around 10:30, if you haven’t seen them yet.
