Happy Fourth of July. It’s a good time to consider the benefits of democracy! MarketCentral is a somewhat democratic nonprofit organization with a board that makes decisions under its mission, and welcomes feedback and participation from the community of vendors and consumers. Please consider joining us to preserve local farmers markets for the future. We can acheive a lot when we work together for shared goals.
The farms continue to shine at the Market at Ix, with beautiful, nutritious and abundant produce, including tomatoes, squash, berries, melons, peaches, beans, peppers, fresh herbs and flowers. There are more farm choices this year, and some seem to be branching out into new territory. For expample, Hands Off Maria is now growing more vegetables to supplement her temalles and traditional Guatamalan arts. For other non-traditional varieties, check out the IRC New Roots booth.
Six or seven vendors offer beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish. It’s fun to rotate vendors to try and compare the various sausage types. New juice vendor Coco-gin is testing the market for coconut water and ginger based juices.
As always, options for breakfast and baked goods require consistant attendance so you can try them all during the season. I’m working my way through the Turkish bakers, and new sourdough baker Boules on Barracks. Have you tried Sugarbear Bakery with “Appalachian” hand pies? They will be trying a new recipe for strawberry cookies. The first Saturday of the month means Deep Roots Milling is coming with fresh milled Virginia flour and grains. Yum. A few “regular” vendors are out this week for the holiday, but it’s an opportunity for others to fill in.
Don’t miss our notable artists and craftspeople offering handmade dresses of African fabric, textile designs, jewelry, beadwork, weaving, pottery, woodworking, glassblowing, pine resin sculpture, chicken photography (why not?), and candles.
