Hello Market Community,
We say so long to June 2026 at this last market of the month. According to “Drought Watch”(whoever that is!), central VA is behind over 4 inches of rain from Jan- May 2026. This is when we really appreciate the efforts of our farmers to grow food for us. Henley’s Orchard says the peaches are smaller, but due to the lack of water, the flavor is more intense. The same result will affect tomatoes. The farms usually have access to irrigation, but when the stream and water table gets lower, the crops will be affected. Another impact of weather is the late freezes that limited strawberry production, or even wiped out blueberry crops for a few farms. The weather has always affected farming, but climate change is causing more severe and frequent impacts. For these reasons, as a community, we will focus on resiliency and sustainability in our local food system. We want more secure markets, greener waste management, and whatever programs we can implement to manage our own impact on climate, all in the interests of supporting local food and small businesses. Thanks as always for doing your part, and if you want to work on a future vision together with the Market Central Board, we have space available.
The weather, and vacation season brings us a full market, but with a few cancellations. We have a new crepe maker: Bomonti; and Khushbu is coming in from Richmond with Indian food selections. JBird AND Frolic are on vacation. If the line at Taiga Coffee gets to long, Shenandoah Joe bricks and mortar coffee shop is a few steps down in the Ix retail shops.
Get your breakfast and products early, before the thunderstorms may arrive. We are a rain or shine market— the food has been baked or prepped, the produce harvested and labeled, so we are ready to go.
