Hello Market Community, Time marches on, and so do the markets. The farms still have abundant summer produce -tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, melons, okra, beans, corn , etc. The peach season is coming to an end, so get your peach an nectarine fix before it is over. If you tried the purslane salad at the Market Central booth last week for National Farmers Market Week, you can find purslane at Elena Day’s Pies and Produce stand. It’s a nutritious green available when it’s too hot for lettuce and kale. Also try New Roots hibiscus leaves, and Malibar Spincah.
We’re introducing From Around the World, a vendor who brings “homemade pickles crafted with fresh ingredients, traditional recipes, and flavors inspired by cultures from around the globe”. At the Starr Hill Market they brough Iranian Pickles, and Persian Torshi, very tasty additions to anything you would add pickles to. (I tried it on tuna). If our plans work out, we will also debut the Falafel Hut. For those looking for Mohammed and his Ghanaian baskets, this is your week; Milk Glass, a vendor who has been building a glass blowing business will also be setting up, to give SBP Glassworks some competition. SBP is our in-residence glass blower. (i.e. he’s there almost every week).
At Starr Hill, we are steadily growing, with great improvements with the Encanto Homestead farm gracing the market with their presence. This Sunday, have a leisuely morning, stretch out on the Jefferson School lawn with a free class presented by Cville Yoga Club, and finish up with a smoothie, brunch, and stock up on fruits and vegetables for the week. Flowers, herbal based skin care producst are also available.
