Farmers Market at Ix, Sept. 21, 2024

Hello Market Community,

Say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. The market hours will change on Oct. 5 to 9:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. Our vendors and growers look forward to a little more sleep. The farm crops are transitioning to the cool weather crops of greens, winter squash, pumpkins, and root vegetables like sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, etc. The brassicas are good winter keepers, too, so look for cabbage, Brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli, bok choy, and heritage varieties. Don’t forget the apples, pears, Chrysanthemums and Dahlias!

If you or someone you know would like to learn more about putting up food for the winter, or starting a food business of your own, check out the fall season series of free classes offered by the Bread and Roses/Market Central collaboration, made possible by the Virginia Food Access Investment Program grant. Thank you, Virginia! Dates and times are posted on the Just Food Just Economy website. Applesauce anyone? (the only class with a fee is Servsafe for food business licenses. Scholarships are available)

As growers transition out, more artists will come in for the holiday season. The Farmers Market at Ix is a year-round market, with a short break after Christmas, and reopening the second week after New Years.

If you plan to cook a local turkey this fall or winter, two of our farmers are taking orders. Bellair Farm can connect you to turkeys raised in Farmville at Spring Creek Meadows Farm; current vendor County Line Farm, is taking reservations on their website. Tillman’s Turkeys of Crozet sells turkeys at City Market, up the street from Market at Ix.

All Virginia Fresh Match recipients should be aware that the 2024 coupons expire at the end of December. Please use all your benefits before the last 2024 market.

See you at the market!
