Daylight savings time ends Sunday, Nov. 2. We have already switched to the fall and winter hours and will not switch back until April. Enjoy more light at the market and stay later as the temperatures warm up.
The farms are beginning to experience frost so the product mix is changing, and more crafts people are coming in for holiday shopping. The farms will continue to produce greens, root vegetables, winter squash, pumpkins and gourds. Cole crops such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, and brussel sprouts keep well, as do apples and cider. Chrysanthemums are the local flowers of choice. Breads, baked goods, meats, eggs, mushrooms, microgreens, kimchi, pickles, jams and sauces are available year round. Arts and crafts will be well-represented in November and December. Use the map linked below to find the participating vendors every week (it varies), and their locations.
Market Central has sponsored the SNAP and nutrition incentive programs for 15 years. We brought the program to City Market in 2010, and to the Farmers Market at Ix in 2018. Our staff members serve as regional lead for Virginia Fresh Match to the Piedmont region. We are paying close attention to the impending loss of SNAP funding, and the replacement programs that are popping up. The State of Virginia has proposed an emergency program until the federal shutdown is over. Private citizens and farms are also offering help. There will be glitches! The logistics to quickly ramp up a large program are challenging, as we have seen the difficulties in organizing the summer feeding for kids, or the senior farmers market nutrition program.
