It doesn’t seem possible that Fall 2025 starts Sept 22. The season isn’t over yet, but hats off to the entire market community from vendors, to customers to Market Central for putting on a market every single Saturday from Jan. 11 to now. The changing of the season at the market means summer fruits and vegetables make way for cool weather greens, root vegetables, apples, mushrooms, and the winter squashes and pumpkins. Check out the fall edition of Edible Blue Ridge magazine (found at the market management tent for free) for an article on the heirloom Seminole squash or pumpkin. Market vendor, Peacemeal Farm, grows the squash to to supply seeds to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. There is a plethora of winter squash to explore at the market: butternut, acorn, kabocha, spaghetti, delicata, tromboncini, and various pumpkins. Find plenty of spices, herbs, honey, sauces, and other amendments at the market to compliment your cooking experiments.
Coming up: Saturday Sept 27, and Sunday Sept 28 at the Starr Hill Market, SNAP customers will receive double the value in Virginia Fresh Match Coupons. Benefits for many SNAP recipients including veterans and legal refugees will be cancelled or reduced at the end of September. VA Fresh Match may be applied to fruits, vegetables, edible plants and seeds, including the long-keeping winter squash. Spread the word to SNAP customers.
Looking for something to do this Saturday after the market? Check out the Long Expected Party - A Hobbit Farm-to-Table Dinner fundraiser to support FIELD OF VIEW - a Non Profit connecting consumers to their food system. There is an extensive menu of food, drink activities and entertainment. Hobbit costumes are encouraged! The participating farms include Little Hat Creek Farm. DJ, the host and local food and farm advocate, is on the Market Central Board, and really knows how to put on an event.
